write a short story about this soulless elf Wizard anime girl

disclaimer: I suck at this and have never once played D&D.
After a magical incident has made me unable to sleep for now a third day, I can barely stay awake. My lone companion, a rat I have not bothered to name, is my only reprieve from complete loneliness.
Stumbling through town like I just came out of the pub, it turns out that there is some kind of festival happening today. People are out everywhere and merchants from all over have set up looking to sell their wares. Since I have nothing better to do today, I might as well look and see if I find anything, though I doubt I can afford it.
Looking past people who speak a language I do not understand trying to sell things I also do not understand, I find someone trying to sell so-called “magical” items. As someone that knows enough magic to be called a wizard by others, I am naturally drawn to such items. Nothing there seems to catch my eye, but eventually my rat companion squeaks as I grab a seemingly unimportant crystal. The merchant points to a small sign without saying a word: GOOD LUCK CHARM. Spells that manipulate something as nebulous as luck are believed to be impossible, but it is likely not a coincidence the rat is intrigued by such a charm. What do I have left to lose anyway? At a week's food cost, quite a bit, actually.
I purchase this good luck charm by handing over far too much, hoping my luck turns around. With a nod, I leave the market and look for some kind of job to do to both pass the time and be able to eat. As I walk my way towards the main place to find work, the humble inn, I manage to find a small amount of money on the ground. Not enough for a day's food, but maybe enough for a drink after a job well done. I walk into the pub and ask the bartender, who by now knows me well, if they know of anything I might do for some money.
“Perfect timing, lass! A group came by looking for a wizard to help them identify something. They said, 'whoever can identify this will not have to eat for a year!' Want to know where you should go?” I nod. “There is an inn about 500 paces due south, you should find it easily as it is the only one around. Tell them I sent ya!” I take this opportunity and make sure my rat is in my bag before I start sprinting south.
I find the inn I was looking for surrounded by nondescript buildings. The foyer is empty, sans a large single man that looks like he might be a knight. “You one of the suckers for this identification thing?” I nod. “Room 12,” a key gets thrown at my feet, “and good luck. We asked the university already and they had no clue.” I grab the normal looking room key and make my way upstairs to the room. I open the door and find an empty sleeping room, save for what appears to be a strange box on a table. I assume this is the thing I am supposed to identify. It sure is strange that no one else is around, but I ignore my best judgement and sit down and begin to observe the box.
This box is extremely heavy and a dark grey, nearly black. I try to apply a small amount of percussive force to see what how it might react. All I get is some pain, this box is made out of something insanely hard. I try now to use some rudimentary magic, and the box seems to not react to anything. After running through my repertoire for what feels like hours, I give up and place my bag on the table to start to leave empty-handed. When the crystal I bought earlier gets near the box, it begins to faintly glow. I do not notice it as anything more than a light trick until my rat friend flicks his tail and the crystal glows even harder as it approaches this box. Noticing this glow, I bring the crystal to above the box and it glows so bright it almost looks blinding. Maybe this is my chance to figure out anything about this strange box.
Noticing that the glowing changes depending on where it is on the box, I flip the box around until I find where the crystal is brightest: right in the centre of what seems to be the top of this box. I run some rather rudimentary magic, and to my surprise, nothing happened again. Disappointed, I grab my things and walk outside and try to find the knight from before, only to note that he is not there. I try to go back into room 12, only to realise that the box that was there is now gone. Confused, I walk outside and make my way back to the pub I was at before. I ask the bartender from before about that job, and they looked at me like I was out of my mind. “Are you sure you asked me for work? Sorry, I have no idea what you are talking about.” I next try to find the market I first went to, only to see a sign that the market would not be around until tomorrow.
Oh no, not again.
